Thank you for visiting and contributing to the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation in honor of my sister, Pamela Berling.
Pam was diagnosed with epithelioid peritoneal mesothelioma in February of 2017. Despite a grim prognosis of no more than a few months, she always believed she would beat this disease and fought it with everything she had. She underwent multiple major abdominal surgeries at the Washington Cancer Institute at Medstar Washington Hospital Center in Washington, DC under the care of Dr. Paul Sugarbaker, and was also enrolled in a clinical trial at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD, under the care of Dr. Raffit Hassan.
Pam always believed she would have more time, that there would always be another treatment, another trial, another drug she could try. Unfortunately, after three and half years of fighting, she had exhausted all available options and we lost her on August 15, 2020. My family is completely devastated by the loss of Pam. She was only 47 years old and had so much life ahead of her.
We are at a loss as to why so few treatments options are available for those facing this horrific disease in comparison to other cancers. Because of this, I implore you to please consider making a donation, no matter how small, to help fund research into future treatment options so that other families might have more options and extended time with their loved ones battling this disease.
